Rhetoric – Grammar – Text Comprehension

The courses offered by Gender & Diversity Management are tailored to the needs of our students and are taught by university-qualified philologists with many years of professional experience. In semester courses, you will specifically train all language skills - from speaking and oral presentation to grammar, vocabulary and writing. Different levels allow both beginners and native speakers to take part in the courses.

Course registration is possible from 2nd January to 7th February, 2025 via the FH-Portal - first come, first served!

Come to the consultation if you

  • ideally have already attended an A1 course,
  • know the basic regularities of verb conjugation and noun declension,
  • know that there are verbs that require the accusative case and verbs that require the dative case,
  • know the personal pronouns.

Course content

  • speaking about yourself and your name, address, origin, education and profession
  • greet each other, order something in a restaurant, indicate possessive relationships, express wishes and preferences
  • reading short texts such as dialogs, advertisements, promotional texts etc.
  • writing short and simple texts
  • grammar at level A1-A2

Duration: March 3rd to April 30st, 2025

Teaching times: every Monday and Wednesday from 4.45 to 6.15 p.m.

Teaching units: 4 teaching units per week, one teaching unit lasts 45 minutes

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 18 people

ECTS credits: 2

Requirement for successful completion: homework and at least 80% attendance

This course is suitable if you

  • ideally have already attended a B1 course,
  • are able to read and understand longer texts from newspapers, magazines or books with the help of a dictionary,
  • have no problems following radio or TV programs and understand a lot (not everything),
  • have already learned the basic grammar rules but still have problems using them from time to time,
  • can express thoughts orally and communicate, albeit with occasional mistakes,
  • have a desire to speak and discuss in class.

Course content

  • talking about everyday life in Vienna and at the university
  • reading interesting texts from literature and science, especially from the fields of psychology, medicine, politics, media and philosophy
  • talking about art
  • writing summaries and essays ("opinion essays")
  • discussion of grammatical problems, e.g. passive voice, subjunctive, subordinate clauses - main clauses
  • preparation for ÖSD B2 test

Duration: February 12th to April 30st, 2025

Teaching times: every Wednesday and Thursday from 4.45 to 6.15 p.m.

Teaching units: 4 teaching units per week, one teaching unit lasts 45 minutes

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 18 people

Venue: FH Campus Wien

ECTS credits: 3

Requirement for successful completion: homework (including longer texts) and at least 80% attendance

This course is suitable if you

  • already have at least level B2 or have just started C1,
  • have no problem reading and understanding longer texts from the newspaper,
  • enjoy writing longer texts, such as summaries or discussions,
  • can follow German-language radio and television programs,
  • like to express yourself in German and have no problem discussing in or in front of groups.

Course content

  • reading complex and authentic text material (mainly literature, daily newspapers and specialist journals)
  • summarizing the most important content and making a personal statement or expanding vocabulary through reflection
  • writing argumentative text types on the basis of input heard or read
  • discussing advantages and disadvantages using context-specific vocabulary
  • spontaneous and fluent speaking in partner and group settings on a wide and varied range of topics
  • giving short presentations on familiar and complex topics
  • preparation for ÖSD C1 test

Duration: February 10th to May 7th, 2025

Teaching times: every Monday and Wednesday from 8.30 to 10.00 a.m.

Teaching units: 4 teaching units per week, one teaching unit lasts 45 minutes

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 18 people

Venue: FH Campus Wien

ECTS credits: 4

Requirement for successful completion: homework and at least 80% attendance

This course is suitable if you

  • speak German as a first language or are advanced (B2+-C1),
  • enjoy speaking in front of other people and want to practise performing in front of others,
  • discuss without hesitation,
  • have no problem preparing speeches and then giving them to your colleagues.

Course content

  • getting to know and trying out the "stage situation"
  • historical introduction to the topic of rhetoric (rhetoric and democracy)
  • discussion about the differences between persuasion and manipulation
  • discussion of the three means of persuasion according to Aristotle: the character of the speaker, the emotions of the audience and the argument
  • the psychology of influence and persuasion according to David Cialdini
  • analysis of commercials and marketing strategies
  • discussion of typical everyday conflict situations
  • giving a speech

 

Duration: 3 block dates on Saturday, March 1st, March 15th and March 29th, 2025

Teaching times: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teaching units: 5 teaching units per block, one teaching unit lasts 45 minutes

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 18 people

Venue: FH Campus Wien

ECTS credits: 2

Requirement for successful completion: Homework (preparation of 2 major speeches/presentations) and at least 80% attendance

Registration takes place online via the FH portal for students. In the section ''Lehrveranstaltungen'' (Courses), you will find the course overview under "Weitere Lehrveranstaltungsangebote'' (Other courses offered) and can register for one or more courses there.

The courses are only available to students of FH Campus Wien.

For applicants: As soon as you have successfully completed your admission procedure and have access to the FH portal, you can register for the courses.

Participation is free of charge. 

Of course, you can attend more than one course.

Yes, there will be a waiting list to wich you can also register through the FH-Portal. For any questions, please contact us via email.

Yes, you will receive ECTS credits (see course description) for successfully completing the German course. Important: If you are interested in credit transfer, please clarify with the secretary’s office of your degree program before the start of the course whether the ECTS credits earned can be transferred to your degree program.

In order to receive a certificate of attendance and the corresponding ECTS credits, you must be present for at least 80% of the course and complete your homework. In agreement with the lecturers, further absences (up to a maximum of 50% of the course time) can be compensated by completing additional assignments.

If less than five people are registered for a course, FH Campus Wien reserves the right to cancel the course. You will receive a cancellation by e-mail.
