Postcard from Portugal

A usual summer sunset in Portugal

Interview with Jona You

What is your favorite place to eat/drink?

My favorite venue was called "Casa Indepedente" which is located close to a busy road (Almirante Reis) in the heart of Lisbon. The bar has a cosy and welcoming atmosphere and is a cultural hotspot for young people these days. The whole concept of the venue is difficult to describe in words: it is like stepping into a huge living room, with warm lights, good music and topped with a healthy touch of Portuguese flair.

What was your best experience during the stay?

The amazing hospitality of the locals and the people in my receiving institute. I have never felt being left alone, everyone treated me as if I was a member of their family, which was mind-blowing.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during your stay?

The biggest challenge was to integrate into a completely new culture and communicating with locals in their native language. Even though having basic Portuguese knowledge, finding the way through the day-to-day life was not a picnic in the beginning of my stay.

What impact will your stay abroad have on your future career?

Through my stay abroad, I was able to grow personally. I gained more self-confidence, since I was able to unveil my personal strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I built a personal network with lifelong friends and business associates, which can be highly beneficial for my future career.

What piece of advice would you give to future exchange students/staff?

  • Listen to your gut - do not let anyone influence your decision.
  • Do not fear the process even if it seems super complicated from outside.
  • Try to step out of your comfort zone and do not seek for similarities to your home country.  Rather focus on cultural differences, embrace them and take things as they come.
  • Just do it! It is a once in a lifetime experience – challenging yourself and learning to adapt to a new environment is essential for your future career.
