Building Services Engineering*

Due to legal changes, the Master's course is currently being revised.

Our basic courses in civil engineering and architecture cover only the essentials of building services engineering. The development of environmental technologies is making automated building services one of the most innovative fields of the construction sector, and one that is inextricably linked to demands for energy efficiency and environmentally responsible construction. You will therefore learn to plan and implement heating, ventilation, climate control and electrical components as an integrated system according to low energy and passive house standards.

Before the studies

When it comes to civil engineering, you know the ropes. With a special interest in the latest technological developments, you stay abreast of the academic debate. Your own environmental awareness motivates you to adopt sustainable approaches, while your understanding of economics enables to you recognise what is actually feasible. You regard components as parts of an overall system rather than individual parts. In weighing up the various options, your thought process is linked-up and solution-focused.

Why you should study with us

Relevant admission requirement

The relevant admission requirement is

  • a completed relevant Bachelor's degree or
  • an equivalent degree at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution

in the fields of civil engineering, construction management, architecture or civil engineering and water management. In exceptional cases, the head of degree program or, in individual cases, the FH-Council (university council) will decide.

Language requirements for admission

The required language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is at least

  • German - level B2.

Legalization of foreign documents

Applicants may require legalization of documents from countries other than Austria in order for them to have the evidential value of domestic public documents. Information on the required legalizations can be found here in PDF format.

Translation of your documents

For documents that are neither in German nor English, a translation by a sworn and court-certified interpreter is required. Your original documents should have all the necessary legalization stamps before translation so that the stamps are also translated. The translation must be firmly attached to the original document or a legalized copy.

Online application - uploading documents

As part of your online application, upload scans of your original documents including all required legalization stamps. For documents not issued in German or English, scans of the corresponding translations must also be uploaded. The head of the study program decides on the equivalence of international (higher) education qualifications. Therefore, your documents can only be checked as part of the ongoing application process.

Your path to studying at FH Campus Wien begins with your registration on our application platform. In your online account, you can start your application directly or activate a reminder if the application phase has not yet started.

During the studies

In the 15 years and more that FH Campus Wien has been running civil engineering programs, the university of applied sciences has built up a wealth of expertise and a broad network that offers you numerous possibilities both during your program and in your subsequent professional life. This network includes construction firms such as STRABAG SE, which cooperates with FH Campus Wien in the further education of its staff and other areas. The final milestone on the educational pathway is the start of the Green Building architecture program. Students in the master's program benefit from this because modern building services need interfaces with civil engineering and architecture, and we provide these in-house. Aside from interdisciplinary theory, practical relevance is our top priority. During the program you will work on an interdisciplinary building equipment project, planning a complex system of building equipment for a commercial or a residential structure. Practical relevance is also guaranteed at our Campus Lecture evenings, which are open to all and feature contributions from prominent experts.

Aside from the study of low energy and passive house standards, it is the emphasis on taking the whole system into consideration from initial planning stage to interdisciplinary interface that makes this program special. Keeping up with scientific trends and developments in environmental technologies will be part of your portfolio in future. You will have achieved your goal only when a system's entire cycle - from production to application - delivers positive energy performance: at that point, a building is operating sustainably and self-sufficiently.

In this master's program you will learn how to plan and operate building equipment facilities as an integrated system.

  • In the process you will examine various forms of renewable energy generation and water supply systems.
  • You will acquire expertise in electrical networks and systems for buildings while becoming familiar with concepts for controlling, monitoring and quantifying technical systems, supply facilities and installations. The scientific fundamentals and methods of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in ventilation and air conditioning systems make up a key part of the program.
  • You will become familiar with the possibilities of total building control through intelligent systems as well as building security systems.

After graduation

As a graduate of this program, a wide range of occupational fields and career opportunities are open to you. Find out here where your path can take you.

Low energy and passive house construction are established as standard methods in residential building while rapidly gaining ground in the area of office construction. For offices that plan building services, the market is expanding rapidly. Building services experts are in demand from facility management firms, building equipment specialists, the building trade and the construction industry; there are also openings in architecture and planning offices. As a professional, you are an expert in heating, ventilation, cooling, sanitary and electrical systems in conjunction with control engineering: an ability that cannot be taken for granted. You will also be the central contact person on energy, engineering and convenience projects and engage in specialist work. As an all-rounder, you are active in development; as a specialist, you deliver quality assurance in parallel during implementation and operation. Planners, operators and specialists with this level of know-how are in short supply and enjoy excellent career prospects.

As a site manager or local construction supervision officer, you accept a share of the responsibility when building equipment is installed. In a civil engineering company you will plan the development of these systems; in an architect's office you deploy them. Your duties will also include overseeing the smooth operation of building equipment. You will work in any of the following areas:

  • Facility management

  • Building equipment companies

  • The building trade and construction industry

  • Property developers

    • Architecture and planning offices

    • Engineering and design offices

    • Public administration bodies

      Networking with graduates and organizations

We closely cooperate with renowned companies in commerce and industry, universities, institutions and schools. This ensures that you have points of contact for professional internships, job opportunities or your participation in research and development activities. Major players in the construction industry such as the PORR Group, STRABAG SE or ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG will support you in various funding programs, provide insights into professional practice, offer the chance of rare part-time jobs or accompany you with professional expertise and collegial advice. You can find many of our cooperations on the website of our Campusnetzwerk. A look at them is always worthwhile and may lead you to a new job or to an interesting event of our cooperation partners!
