(LISTEN-IN) Social environment-orientated and systemic empowerment for homeless and precariously housed people with an experience of cancer

Projekt duration: 1st April 2025 - 31st Dezember 2027

LISTEN-IN is an innovative research project to improve healthcare for homeless and precariously housed people with cancer experience in Austria. Social inequality often makes it difficult for these groups of people to access healthcare services. LISTEN-IN relies on participatory approaches to strengthen the health literacy of those affected and at the same time sensitize the health and social system to their needs.

The project uses the PhotoVoice method, in which those affected record the realities of their lives in photos and stories. These visual and narrative contributions offer valuable insights and promote understanding of the challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis in disadvantaged life situations. At the same time, the organisational health competence of health and social institutions is measured and improved in order to facilitate access to health services and break down existing barriers.

LISTEN-IN brings together those affected, healthcare professionals, researchers and decision-makers to develop solutions together. The aim is to sustainably improve quality of life, reduce prejudice and make the healthcare system more inclusive. A public exhibition of the PhotoVoice results as well as targeted workshops and publications are intended to raise awareness in society and among political actors and contribute to the implementation of the recommendations developed.

LISTEN-IN promotes social justice in the healthcare system and offers a model that can be transferred to other contexts and disadvantaged groups.
